Chronic pain can debilitate us. Or it can just gnaw away at us, eroding our motivation and energy throughout the day. That moment that you’ve been sitting for a long period of time and you get up and it catches somewhere in your body and you stand still holding the space holding the pain, recovering from a spasm.
Or when you go to do a task that’s out of the ordinary for you and afterwards you recognise you’re feeling really sore. Or the one I hear the most is often people ringing up to book in in a hurry because they’ve had a sudden injury that seemingly came out of nowhere.
Now, these kinds of injuries never come out of nowhere. Often there’s a predisposition in the body with a muscle which has been laying down layers of protection or tension. And the muscle tissue can become so tense. And immovable that the neighbouring muscles feel strained and well, one wrong move and it’s all undone, ending in a strain or a sprain. or a nerve that’s impinging. And these moments can be quite excruciating.
Now, I’m sure most of you understand what I’m Speaking of. So how do we avoid these movements? Or moments. Well, firstly, we rehab from our injury.
So rehabilitation is always important, and it takes time because we’ve laid it down for so long, we need time to fix it now because that damage has been done not only to the area that’s hurting but repair may be required in strengthening to avoid the problem again. After we rehab, we want to look at a regular routine to avoid the same issue occurring again. Now this might be a change in posture or the ergonomics of our working space. It might also be taking regular breaks or having a regular exercise routine to help us keep limber and mobile.
I often suggest to clients that our exercise should entail movements that are out of ordinary for our regular day to increase range of motion. So this allows our body to be prepared for any movements that are unexpected and that can cause injury. Kind of like creating a buffer space for the body.
Now, I know you’ve heard all of these things. Before, but this is not only to bring awareness around chronic pain, and managing it or overcoming it, but I hope you recognize the importance of a routine that keeps your body in shape and keeps going for longer.
Now this in turn also helps us reduce our stress. Which helps you manage stress. But can also help you to maintain productivity at work and other activities.
The next time you feel that little tweak in the body it’s a reminder to yourself that I should really go for a massage. Don’t leave it too late. The body’s warning signs are like small whispers. Compared to the mind that wants to keep pushing to get something done.
Don’t let that small whisper turn into a big roar from your body when it folds from the chronic tension. Get in early and get a plan going, making it a regular habit makes it easier because it just becomes a part of your day without you having to think too hard about it or to muster the energy, if it’s a regular.
